What schools usually ask for

Policies differ, so check your own school's. Most schools that permit the hijab ask for a plain colour matching the uniform, most often black, navy or grey, with white also common. Many ask for a secure fit with nothing loose, particularly for PE.

What changes in September 2026

From 1 September 2026, state-funded schools in England must limit compulsory branded uniform items to three or fewer, or four at secondary schools where one of them is a tie. The limit sits in the Education Act 1996, as amended by the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, and is set out in the Department for Education's statutory guidance on the cost of school uniforms. A plain hijab bought from any retailer is not a branded item and does not count towards that limit.

Everyday wear and PE are different jobs
